I just find it somewhat coincidental that a namesake of mine figures in Mr Plaskett's example regarding coincidences.
On a matter related to IAC, I always find it absurd when people explain (often patronisingly) that such and such a group of people can't handle grog because their ancestors didn't imbibe. They don't say the can't handle it 'culturally' but that they physiologically can't take their drink: they get drunk easily.
I believe this is bullshit. For a 'race' (Europeans)to have a genetically inherited tolerance to alcohol there must have been individuals in the past who died because they got drunk easily, before reproducing. (So that only the 'fit' - those who can take their grog - survived)
But I put it to you that not being able to handle your grog increases the likelihood of reproduction. Cheap drunks probably get laid more than others. Cheap drunks, historically, are probably more likely to rape.
Instead, the reasons some groups can't 'handle' grog is more to do with self-esteem and feelings of emptiness that come from dispossession. I live Australia we have a dispossessed indigineous minority, many of whom have alcohol problems.
We also currently have a horrible government that is fond of scapegoating people with dark skin ... but I digress.
Bye bye
To see the chain of coincidence, you need to look up my entry for May 6, today, on:

I was looking for a good summary of Koestler's book (which I also read some time ago) but couldn't find one via Google but it led me to you, I'm glad to say, and I'll now add a link to your site on my page as above. Hope you might do likewise.
Very best wishes
