It is the scenario from Hell. According to a
plausible theory, fruit and veg. are actually
good for you - but for a strange reason.
Hard cheese, meat and fish cause blood acidity
to rise. Guess what? Yer veg 'n' fruit reduce
it. (Oddly, even acidic fruit like oranges,
enough, reduce blood acid.) Revolting leafy
veg, like spinach are the best of all. (Groan).
Why is a high blood acidity bad? Because you
are eaten away from the inside. In a desperate
attempt at neutralising the acid, the body plunders
bone mineral and breaks down muscle. This is
reversible, BUT... if your diet is perpetually
acid causing, then over the months and years
muscle and bone loss is the result. Blokes increasingly
get hip fractures too, this isn't just a girlie
problem.
Paradoxically hard cheese is the worst blood-acid
food of all, so the calcium it contains is useless.
(But milk is OK, it's the cheese making process
makes hard cheese blood-acid nightmare.) Grain,
(pasta, bread, rice etc) makes the acid problem
worse, which dovetails perfectly with my diet
theory.
Soft drinks like coke, pepsi - anything fizzy
- are loaded with phosphorous along with the
usual crap. The resultant phosphoric acid in
the blood corrodes bone faster than HR Giger's
Alien spit. And this toxic shit is pushed by
huge corporations onto unsuspecting "users"
and no one is doing anything about it.
So there you have it, meat and fish are fine
but you need lots of fruit and veg if you don't
want to dissolve into a pathetic, fragile wreck.
Life really isn't fair.
Update: Until recently I routinely suffered
mild aches and pains in my muscles. After hard
exercise, lactic acid causes the sensation of
stiffness and soreness, but I felt like that
even when I hadn't exercised. High acid
levels in my blood may have been having a similar
effect to the lactic acid. Soon after I increased
my relative intake of fruit & veg, the everyday
aches and pains have unexpectedly gone away
(well, mostly). I love serendipity. Newer Update: According to
Walter C. Willett and Meir J. Stampfer, nutrition
scientists, writing in the letters section of
the Scientific American (May 03): "Several
studies find that high calcium intake, from
dairy products or supplements, is associated
with a higher risk of prostate cancer; preliminary
evidence also suggests a link with ovarian cancer.
We recommend consuming dairy products in moderation".
I imagine the moral of the story is that it
is better to stick to natural foods we evolved
to eat, and avoid the mega-tasty, modern, high
blood acid stuff.
