Comment:Just read your bit on TV addiction & couldn't agree more! When you consider how short and precious! real life is- & how TV manipulates emotion and distorts truth- you begin to realise what a waste of valuable time it really is. Is this the best we can do? Invent a mind-numbing, conversation -killing, self-administered plug- in drug to sell more of what we don't need? Or could we be here for a greater purpose? Hmmmmm Re: your dieting column. Check out a vegan diet if you want to be free of animal torture and mass produced rubbish. Eat tasty food with a clear conscience and never have to worry about dieting- Now there's an idea........

Comment:Eadon, I definitely agree with your article. I've personally stopped watching any TV, almost wanting to take a shotgun to every TV I see, before reading this. Who knows how much my intellect may have further developed without being spoiled by a TV, and inane video games. However inane video games at least assist in some facility of eye-hand coordination; you can't even get [useful] news off of a TV now, so what good is it?

Comment:Joe! Let the doe be with you Brother, I think I am just a man you wanted to hear from. This is what you do: You buy latest computer equipment, one computer per member of family, super fast Internet connection, wireless network. The idea is that all members of your family will have personal access to Internet. Then you start to work on them, there is plenty of helpful literature available in specialist bookstores – I especially recommend “How to get your wife addicted to Internet Shopping” and its money-saving sequel “How to teach your wife to shop on-line without purchasing”. Get your kids addicted to chat rooms. Then when they are all busy typing and humming to themselves – it is time to simply remove the old, dusted telly – nobody will notice!

Comment:Well.. I find no choice but agree with everybody here, including ead's brilliant 'talk back' comments ...what a sad day (my B Day BTW) ...what a boring discussion! ;-) TV sucks, PC is an antidote.. but that does not mean it is a solution.. just 'damage limitation'...which is brilliant point because sometimes we just use one evil to kill other one off.. nothing wrong with that...but it does not make 'killer evil' 'good'... just usefull in the circumstances.. it is still an 'evil'....

Subject:TV is not ALL bad as you suggest :)
Comment:Yes, I do agree that it probably does turn 'mind to mush', but practically all entertainment will if taken to an extreme. For that matter, almost anything if taken too far will have negative consequences. I for one see nothing wrong with watching my Missouri Tigers lose in the NCAA tournament. :) In essence, it is difficult to make blanket statements about anything, and this is no exception. You say 'TV is bad'? Well, I say 'Some TV is bad' and 'Too much TV is bad'. Almost everything has good uses, we must simply be careful to not misuse them. For example, a hammer is a wonderful tool to use for various construction jobs. However, if a majority of people started killing people with hammers, we should not condemn the tool, but the use of it. Same with TV. Have a great day, ex-n

Comment:reminds me of a quote from Jerry Seinfeld: 'It's an habitual medium,' he says matter-of-factly. 'Most people aren't really entertained. What they need is they need to watch TV. Entertainment is almost a luxury item. Television is like a flyer somebody sticks on your windshield. Who gives a damn what's on it? It's iridescent wallpaper. Sometimes I think people just like the light on their faces.'

Comment:Your comments are absolutely spot on! As you noted yesterday, my cartoon story 'Augustine & Inertia' brings up the same point. http://www.nataliedarbeloff.com/inertia.html It's amazing how we allow our minds to be invaded/ taken over by any old rubbish that other minds conceive whereas we would strongly object if people were to dump their actual (non-virtual) stuff in our homes. OK I'm not saying that there isn't occasionally something worth watching. But it's very * very *rare. If anyone wanted to waste their time even more, they could do a survey and come up with a percentage.

Comment:I confess...I'm a tv addict. It has taken such a hold of me that it is currently on while I sit and surf for info on tv addiction. That's like drinking at an AA meeting! Every single day, I sit like a recluse not talking, yelling at my dogs when they make noise, watching the tv...mostly Discovery Channel! (My feeble attempt at justification!) Every day I feel nearly sick to my stomach that I am not doing productive things with my time. I'm a long time musician and constantly wonder if I'd spent the time honing my skills, could I help chase the crap off my radio? (Ahemm...Brat Spears) Well this sad, sad 20-something is getting off his *duff* and taking the first step to turning off the tv. Now where's that remote??? PLEASE, PLEASE...if you have overcome your tv addiction (and it doesn't involve prayer or chanting)....share your story!!!

My wife have so much more time to do the things that parents say that they do not have time for. Get rid of your TV and bring back playing with a lump of wood and a blanket.. you will see in time that children will entertain themselves and use their imagination instead of having deep vein thrombosis!!!Regards charles

Comment:My almost-14-year-old son is a horrible TV and video game addict. He could win a TV addicition championship. He suffers from every symptom of TV addiction: Learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, obesity, lack of socialization, scary world syndrome (found out about this TV-related condition on the web). In addition, he has epilepsy. He also has dyslexia and can't read a thing even though he is 14. And his behavior sucks, too. I can't believe I have let him go on this long. I am single and used it as a babysitter for my two kids, but the older girl developed normally and doesn't care if it is on or off. But my son is in serious trouble, so I am removing the television from the house on Sunday night. I am letting him keep his video game systems, and he can drag them to his friends' houses when they invite him over, but no one will ever play another video game in my home. I am terrified about his withdrawal, and will I ever be able to leave the house again (he watches when I'm not home, due to Scary World Syndrome), etc., but I am doing it. I'll let you know how it goes!

Comment:fight prime time read a book. Im writing a paper for school, and while doing some 'half-assed' research found this page. Its wonderful that other people feel the same as I do about TV -- its such a waste of time! People are always so up-tight about how busy they are all the time, well if they would stop watching 6 hours of TV a day... get my point? Computer games are just as addictive and are also a waste of time. No one would 'give' time to thir job, but they dont even hesitate to hand over hours of their lives to TV and computer.

And I would also like to say that television is the reason why young teenagers skip school everyday, in this country. Its the reason why America is the fattest nation in the world, because we have nothing better to do with our lives. And it the reason why we're not as intellegent as other people may believe. I would like to thank you for taking the time an opportunity to construct this web page, so people like me can use this and make up an essay about in college. Take care and Godbless! Comment:I totally loath TV, yet I still watch it (while I do knowing that i am wasting my time watch some f*cking crap)....why, becuse Like you said 'TV places you into a literally hypnotic state of relaxation' is absolutely true. Hard day at work, what better way to relax than watch some crap TV!!! People, including myself, will use any excuse to watch TV....it really f*cken sickens me. I believe that is why as a society we are so depressed and f*cked. It is a cycle: - Watch TV - sacrifice friends\family\activities - Feel depressed that we are alone \ not doing anything so we - Turn the box on and...Watch TV - etc etc etc May not be the truth, but it is how I see it. TV is screwing us up both mentally and physically. Wonder why Kids have such short attention spans, well with so many channels to chose from I am not suprised. I will never use the TV as a 'babysitter' (which my dad did) with my kids...

Comment:In my own opinion, (and i really dont care what anyone thinks of it but...) tv is the worst thing that could have happend to the world. It has corrupted soo many people. If you think about it... in reality, TV can make you fat. What do you do when you watch tv? You sit, and then you eat, and then you may go have a smoke on the commercial break. thats not right. Commercials are another thing all on their own. THEY MAKE YOU BUY SHIT YOU DONT NEED!!! fuck that. and like this guy said, why watch tv when you could be out doing something. Like come on people, you cant live without a social life... uhh... this is pointless, the people who actually watch tv are probably too busy watching tv...

Comment:I could not agree more, my mother and her byofriend watches television from 7pm at night to about 10 30/11pm. It's total madness! I find myself never watching tv nowadays, because when i do it just fustrates me like you said, i just feel like im sat there doing nothing when i could be doing something alot more constructive with the time im sat in front of a box. I also believe that tv can and does ruin peoples creative side because watching tv is so mindless, it gets you into a routine, you never really think about anything different or abstract. Also i noticed if my mother and her Bf dont get to watch their favorite programs (emmerdale and corrination street) god help them, they get really anxious and annoyed that they missed their 30 minutes of escapism.

Comment:The rot really set in for television about the mid eighties, when the BBC lanched the septic-opera Eastenders, about a load of whinging ner-do-well cockneys who gradually kill each other off. Point is - this had a set number of days when it had to be shown and it stopped the BBC putting on different dramas, documentaries etc in those time slots. Next big change was the news, working on the idea that: 'we can't tell them about that story about Palestine, India Etc because they might not be alble to concentate on a difficult issue', the news became a series of 'Life Style' stories on health, fashion and domestic news - nothing too taxing for the proles. Last year aroud about June I was trying all the channels and I seemed to have a choice between wall to wall Big Brother or The World Cup. Reality TV and sport have become the bullies of the TV world, becuase every other type of programme gets pushed aside for them. I decided that enough was enough and pulled the bloody thing out at the wall - it has never been on since!

Comment:I happen to browse this site and I find it informative, but the t.v thing I have to argue. T.V is like any other recreation one must control the activity. I must defend the cable networks like discovery, National Geographic, Travel channel, etc. They provide educational programs. Most topics are interesting and can fill the mind with usefull facts. I will point of the fact it seems hypocritical for you guys to bash t.v and in replace sit in front of a computer for 13 hours a day. It's about self control and knowing when it's time to turn the t.v off and do other things. In America our society has been geatly influenced t.v and we are the greatist country on earth (currently we are being ran by criminals though). Anyways just wanted state my points. Thanks.
