The name's Eadon,
James Eadon (call me
Jim) and given the domain name of this site,
I thought I'd write a page about the ancestry
of the name Eadon and for and about Eadons in
general. Those of us who are called Eadon belong
to an exclusive club, for it is a rare name.
The Eadon name may be a corruption of Eden,
as were variations like Eaden. Spelling was
notoriously volatile, especially before the
printing press. The origin of the name Eden
is English. One theory holds that Eden is after
Castle Eden or Eden Burn in County Durham in
the north of England. This might help to explain
why there are a concentration of Eadons and
Edens in the northern English counties of Yorkshire
and Lancashire. Another idea is that Eden derives
from the English female first name Ede or Edde,
Eden being "son of Ede". The Yorkshire
Poll Tax of 1379 mentions a Johannes Slipar
and his wife Edden.
The book of
One Hundred Rolls of 1273
contains a
Nicholas filius Edon and a
Nel filius Edine. (Filius means
son
of) Let's here it for our ancestors, good
old Granddad Nick and Granny Nel! More recently
an Eden (Anthony Eden) was prime minister of
Britain (1955 - 1957).
Eadons are divine! There's an Irish Celtish
Goddess called Eadon, she was the Nurse of Poets
who some say was a bard. According to a female
Celt (who runs
The
Ancient Ones website) who takes her "magikal
name" and "altar ego" after the
goddess Eadon, "In ritual invoke Eadon
to open your own creative channels."
Jack Eadon (no relation?) who, in the sixties,
was lead vocalist/song writer in
Khazad
Doom and author
writes:
"...Scotland, the place of my dad's birth
(Wellsbank, near Dundee). Supposedly I still
have many cousins over there from London to
Glasgow. BTW, the Eadon family lineage is so
thin you and I have to be related in some way.
I even found a bunch of Eadons in Australia;
that line got started years ago when an English
couple got married and moved Down Under.
"I heard from my aunt in Florida who has been
corresponding with a distant relative in Australia, the one who is a
genealogist. Anyway, the gal in Australia told my aunt that she procured
the death certificate of a joint relative (on the Ramsay side of our family)
who died 20 June 1892 in Wellsbank, Scotland. In fact, his vocation was
listed as master grocer of Wellsbank. Back then I guess they had such a
thing as a master grocer.
"Years later my grandmother (a Ramsay) married my grandfather(an Eadon) and
gave birth to their kids in Wellsbank. My dad was born in Wellsbank in
1918."
Gratuitous Eadon plug: By the way, Jack writes books
these days. His latest novel,
Latent Image, is recently published.
Update August 2003: Jack has two more books out:
The Armstrong Solution and
The Charm from Delhi: further info resides on Jack's site,
www.eadonbooks.com. Jack's books are - or will be - depending on the title, available from
amazon.com.
Please
send
me your reviews and i will send them on to Jack.
Moving back to the topic of music, I've put together a review of the

Jim adds: Apart from Eadon the Irish Goddess,
I've never encountered Eadon as a Christian name before. What style!]

I Belong to the few Eadons here in Glasgow.
The only Eadons we know here are direct relatives.
