Hence, due to his reliance on rubbish holywood cliches as seen in his idea of 'The 3,' the end is a critique on the generic hollywood fare, but it is an intelligent one that fits perfectly with the concept of the film. | | | | | From: |
Cris | 2004-12-08 02:10:25 | | Subject: | ending of adaptation | | Comment: | I think the ending totally works. i think it IS over the top and self-aware, and I think the point is that Kaufman needs to adapt in order to thrive in modern life. all movie long he has been unable to act-he can't get it on with the girl, he can't talk to Streep-and so he has to give up his past self and become oblivious like his brother in order to be happy. At one point Streep says that adaptation is easier for plants because they have no memory, and that for humans adaptation can be almost shameful. that's the shame we feel at the end when we see Kaufman (and the movie) giving up his ideals and falling into old cliches. But that adaptation helps him survive. | | | | | From: |
Rebecca | 2005-09-10 16:54:21 | | Subject: | Donald | | Comment: | I want Donald to be Charlie's alternate personality and not a twin brother. The theme of multiple personalities comes up many times in the movie. I'm intrigued by the mental twists and turns that would add to the story. Remember when Donald is discussing his multiple personality script idea with Charlie and, in disgust, Charlie explains that you can't have one personality locked in the basement while another is freely roaming above. Well, I think it would be pretty damn interesting if Donald, with all his wisdom and ideas and girlfriends, is just in Charlie's head. | | | |
