I should have known better than to trust The
Big Lebowski when Empire Magazine (UK) gave
it maximum stars. If you read any review by
Empire then do not be too influenced, after
all, they gave Forest Gump full points
for f***'s sake. Sad magazine or backhander
magazine, take your pick.
To the local Hollywood-controlled multiscreen
fleapit for The Big Lebowski by
the Coen Brothers. I like Coen Brothers movies,
but The Big Lebowski is a bit
of a disapointment. It concerns a hippy, Lebowski
(the excellent Jeff Bridges) who haplessly tries
to solve some pointless investigation.
The Big Lebowski has nice comedy
set pieces, for example a fantastic marmoset
scene. But the motif of the movie was that it
deliberately refused to be inspiring. Just when
you thought a plot twist might occur all you
got was a deliberate damp squib. OK so it is
ironic but the irony quickly rusted. (Sorry
for the pun).
The Big Lebowski is a dumb film
seeking to be clever, it is another example
of Americans wantonly glorifying morons and
being lump-headed about it. Affecting people
to covet intelligence (or even think) really
is not the American Film Industry's way. It
is a tad disturbing to witness this malady in
a relatively non-commercial, character-driven
film where we would expect more wit.
P.S. By "wit" I don't mean ceaseless
f'ing and blinding just for the freaking sake
of it.
Jim's
preferred ending:
That marmoset stars in a spin-off horror movie
all of its own.
