Interesting review. The point about the reviewer's comment on the Nativist point of view deserves some commentary.
The slant in America will usually go with the immigrants. This is true in movies and other mediums. The reason for this has much to do with the fact that the vast majority of Americans are immigrants and the recognition that the immigrants along with the cheap land in America made the United States the leading economic power back in the 19th Century and continues to have a positive impact going into the 21st century.
This is not to say that the Nativists point of view was without merit. Nativists and the Labor Unions looked at immigrants as a method the employers used to lower the cost of labor. In fact it was not until the Nativeist types worked with immigrants that you had real economic benefits enjoyed by the workers. If you want to see an example of this point you might want to rent 'Matewan'.
But the movie did try to give the book 'Gangs of New York' and I must say that Scorsasee really tried to do the book justice.
I don't think the ending made any sense in compliance with the rest of the film. I'm curious as to why they didn't present the ending like most would say, 'more focused on Amsterdam and Bill the butcher'. Also, I don't ever remember reading about a mob that is taken out by the governments militia. If anyone understands the ending and has an optimum memory of the past and the movie. Please feel free to email me so I can understand the last 15 minutes of the movie. Thanks...and just incase my email isn't shown here it is.

Being a great fan of Martin Scorcese, I didn't want to miss GONY. Yeah, like you said Di Caprio was a bore and mis cast. Daniel Lewis was superb. Over all the movie didn't measure upto my expectations.
i think this film was a good insight to the limited means of living and a really promising inventory of its excistince. it really opens up one's mind to the reality of the sole that is within our nature' i thought the plot was a vision of the purity of one's mind that made it converse with the darker side of your desires.
