Subject:Kill Bill vol. 1
Comment:WHAT????!!! Somehow, I think the point of this film has entirely eluded you, Mr Eadon. This film is clearly not intended to be the sophisticated piece of artistry we were all anticipating. This is a movie made by a movie obsessive for other movie obsessives. Generally, when films are aimed at hollywood audiences a directors nod toward other film makers is usually too subtle to be noticed by most. Clearly not the case in Kill Bill- the main advertisement poster has Uma Thurman in a black and yellow bikers outfit. Everyone knows Game of Death! And the point you make about him ripping of japanese film and anime- there is actually a 10 minute fully rendered anime sequence! If he punched you in the face it would be more subtle as to how the film was inspired. Obviously Tarantino is making a film from many different aspects of all his favourite genres and he is pretending to do nothing else. From a cinematic point of view the choreography is fantastic, the set pieces are beautiful and the still shots are classically framed. And for not mentioning the soundtrack in your article you should should be ashamed of yourself. Absoloutely incredible. And finally, although I do agree with you that 2 films are to cash in on Tarantino's 'cult' status, I heard the real reason was that he couldnt get a final cut he was happy with to under 4 hours. To be honest, I don't care- I get to see another one in February! Possibly the greatest film I have ever seen. If you don't like this film you clearly hate all pop culture from the last 50 years. How dull.

Comment:For a moment, I thought the world had gone crazy. So many people were raving about Kill Bill but it completely sucked. It was so good to find people like you who saw it for what it was. HYPE. And $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I don't know how many Far East films you've seen, but if any of the great HK martial arts films had that funding, no one would be talking about Tarantino. For one thing, none of the girls seemed to know how to handle a katana properly. And the scene at the beginning when Uma manages a tiny jump over the sofa? I nearly laughed! I guess what bites is that actresses like Michelle Yeoh really CAN do martial arts. You could give Uma a katana and give Michelle nothing and Ms Thurman would have 0% chance of winning. But she gets no recognition for it 'cos she's Asian.....

Comment:Anyway if you wanna see a decent martial arts film, try 'New Dragon Gate Inn', 'The Moon Warriors' or 'Butterfly and Sword'. 'Hero' is good if you liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Japanese-wise, there's a good film called 'Shogun's samurai' and something new out called 'Azumi' (kuniochi, etc). I totally agree about the rip-off of Japanese films. It was so poor. Kurosawa was a master in so many areas - Tarantino is just a nut-case Plus Japanese (and Chinese) actresses are so more evil than Western ones. They've got the nack.

Comment:By the way, I think Lucy Lui just had a poor script. When she shouted at the Yakuza she needed to but more belly in it. Apart from that she said little of any consequence. And when you said she was too 'honourable'. Well Yakuza do have a samurai-style honour code (odd as it is). And for Uma's acting. Apart from the 'oh my baby's gone' scene, she only did quietly angry most of the time
