Alex W. | 2004-01-15 10:58:40 | | Subject: | Very cool movie | | Comment: | The wonderful thing about this film was the characters. I hated Denethol with a vengence (bastard!!) and almost cried when Pippin was singing as Faramir rode out to his death. (Almost) There were a few things I found hard to swallow however; Sam fights off the giant spider, shelob, but then feels the need to panic and hide when a couple of orcs come along (Yes, their accents made me cringe too.) Aragorn changes his mind a few times outside the black gates as far as whether or not he's on a horse, but that is trivial. The 'Politically correct' moment when Eowyn kills the witch king was dissapointing, but made up for by the gasp of pain and collapse afterwards. A brilliant film which you cannot sanely critisise. Thankyou Peter Jackson!! | | | | | From: |
Crozzer | 2004-01-27 09:01:29 | | Subject: | Stupid poncey, ringletty Hobbits'ssss | | Comment: | Gollum/Smeagol was the Dog's dangly bits. If the actor and animators don't get some kind of Oscar there is somethng seriously wrong. The Orks were both evil & funny. Legolas & Gimli heroic to the end and the Elephant battle scene was brilliant. However there were bags of things wrong with this film:
Gimli & Legolas were sidetracked to become nothing more than incidental characters.
Army of the Dead? - where did that come from? Still I suppose showing the swarm of them from a distance was cheaper than the brilliant battle of Helms Deep in Two Towers.
The Saruman cop out was abysmal - 'He's locked in the Tower Gandalf, and he's not coming out' says Treebeard. 'Righto' says Gandalf, 'We'll all bugger off to Mordor and forget about him then'.
Gay Hobbits? - I thought Jackson had 'cut and shut' this movie with a Doris Day film. There was that much soft focus and simpering ringletted smileyness that I wanted to leave early. 20 minutes of Hobbity niceness and an ending unfaithful to the books was a waste of celluloid that could have been better spent on a few more scenes with the Dynamic Dwarf & Elf Duo - 'Toss Me'.
Two Towers was far better. | | | | | From: |
Shelby Sherman | 2004-02-02 13:10:04 | | Subject: | Letdown? yes... | | Comment: | I know that a trilogy finale like this is vulnerable to a truckload of lofty expectations, but I really was disappointed in 'The Return of the King'. I know, I know, it was wonderful, a masterpiece conclusion and will win a plethora of awards, but it seemed as if the actors were just going through the motions AND emotions. The movie was certainly spectacular, better than 99% of the crap that is thrown at the screen, but it just didn't make it like 'The Two Towers'. | | | | | From: |
Pyramid | 2004-02-24 00:57:29 | | Subject: | Politically correct? Ha Ha | | Comment: | Responding to another responder's misguided use of a late 20th century phrase(PC) when refering to a scene in a novel more than half a century old- yes Tolkien's book Eowyn is a warrior (sheildmaiden) as is commented on by Aragorn in both the book and movie- so her killing of the Ringwraith was not Peter Jackson's 'invention' or attempt to be politically correct. It happened exactly this way in the book- and in the movie-they actually toned down what you refer to as 'political correctness'- the book's Eowyn is even more kick ass. By the way, Eowyn's sheildmaiden character is an archtype of old mythology and some histories. There have actually been women warriors, politically correct my @ss! | | | | | From: |
Mark Raburn | 2004-11-05 22:28:30 | | Subject: | The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy sucks | | Comment: | The Return of the king is a boring, terrible, horrible, and the baddest movie of all time I can't stand it I'm giving this film a 1/10 Because it's so gay and way too long it's go's for like 192 mins Do not watch this gay film The Lord Of The Rings is the worst, worst, worst, worst, worst movie ever The Jurassic Park Trilogy rules ok so do not watch The Lord Of The gay Rings. | | | | | From: |
Victoria | 2005-01-29 05:42:41 | | Subject: | The return of the king | | Comment: | [your quote]'It infinitely fortunate that they didn't Tomb Raider-ise this trilogy. OK, there is an utterly implausible female-warrior-in-battle scene, but even that potential travesty, an indulgence, which is not to be found in Tolkien's novel, works in the context of setting up an emotional scene. And at least the vivacious Eowyn seems reluctant, vulnerable and, well, so achingly feminine.'
[my response]I wish you had read the books and if you have, please re-read the them! Eowyn's battle scene where she defeated the witch-king in the third installment is most definitely in the story that Tolkien wrote. It was not added to satisfy the PC Nazis. By the way, in the books, Eowyn laughed proudly in the witch-king's face before she struck him down! There's 'reluctant, vulnerable and, well, so achingly feminine' for ya! | | | | | From: |
me | 2007-08-12 04:06:40 | | Subject: | mistake | | Comment: | great review, i agree with just about everything said... but, in the novel, the rohan chick did kill the head wraith. it's one of the best passages from book, and i'm really surprised you forgot about it. i'm not a fanboy, haven't read the books for over ten years, just wanted to point that out | | | |
