Moulin Rouge!
Directed by Baz Lurhmann

Moulin Rouge! is a modern musical. But, thank God, rather than try to be cool - which really annoyed me about Lurhmann's rendition of Romeo and Juliet - this movie is pure good fun. It has both style and content.

Set in the opening year of the nineteenth century Moulin Rouge is about the love affair between a Parisian courtesan and a lowly writer. An evil Duke is lured into commissioning a vibrant production at the Moulin Rouge, but in exchange he wants his girl.

The singing/acting is great, Kidman is lavish but McGregor is a bit girly though. The comic showmanship of Jim Broadbent in this movie is perfect. The songs (pop both newish and old) are cheesy but they work. The whole thing works! Moulin Rouge is full of wonderful imagery, humour and class. Plus the digital effects were done well. During production Kidman broke her ribs to fit in that corset. Makes a change from the usual I-wanna-bigger-trailer comfort of your average spoiled-brat actress.

Dying of consumption? A good musical never lets a lethal lung disease get in the way of the singing :)

I'm not a huge Queen fan, but Queen's The Show Must Go On is the best song in Moulin Rouge. Freddy Mercury was improving with time. His illness presumably inspired the depth and definitely the poignancy of his best stuff. Dying is the root of all art.

The villain in Moulin Rouge was not abominable enough.
