"There is a fine line between coincidence and fate" - The Mummy Returns.

The Mummy Returns: Sequel to The Mummy. The plot involves a family (Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Freddie Boath) interfering with the affairs of living and dead Egyptians and getting into all sorts of jolly japes and scrapes. Never is their safety seriously in doubt, but there is the odd twinge of curiosity as to how the plot will deliver this kidnapped female or that abducted child from the clutches of the unmenacing villains.

The Mummy Returns contains various comedy Brits who seem to be there to make the All-American Hero, complete with a jaw like a crate, look good. A very strange thing happens though. The invincible All-American Hero is not as interesting. His job is to fight, have angst, and be macho. He's OK but is about the least watchable thing in The Mummy Returns.

There is also an annoyingly virtuous Arab character (Oded Fehr) who tries to convince us that the All American Hero is a reincarnation of some ancient Magi. If there was anything less plausible, I have yet to glance askance at it. It is like being asked to consider Ronald McDonald to be a mystic sage.

The baddie girl is a gem in The Mummy Returns. She is a yummy mummy! Her first fight with the good girl, where they in former incarnations in Ancient Egyptian times, is a blast. They attack one another with these horrible pointy dagger things and do it with picturesque gymnastic rolls and kicks. The battle of the yummy mummies! Great stuff! Bravo!!!! Encore!!!!!

Also fun was the the fight between the yummy mummy and the cowardly chap (John Hannah). When he actually managed to land a punch and gave a little pleased smile of surprise, I was deeply amused. Lovely comic acting by both and nice script writing!

The special effects were sometimes computery, especially the huge army of upright dogs, and often amazing, like the oasis scenes. There were hundreds of effects, some brilliant, others cheesy, and I enjoyed them all.

So all in all, The Mummy Returns is a fun movie then!

The Mummy Returns can't make it's mind up about the villains. There are no really menacingly evil villains at all.

Also why did the god remove Imhotep's powers to allow for mortal combat when the Scorpion King was armed with bloody huge claws? And then Imhotep didn't put up a fight anyway. And where the hell did Izzy get that fuel for his ballon from so fast? And how the hell did that thing whizz throught the air with all the velocity of a stealth fighter? That's what I want to know!

But, shockingly, the ending strikes a surprising note of intelligence and poignancy regarding the Mummy's demise. I really did feel for sorry for poor Imhotep as those little demon bastards attempted to drag him and our hero to hell. He watched his enemy be saved by his Mrs and he watched yet more aghast as his own lover abandoned him. For one, I think the wrong man escaped. I absolutely loved this ending though.

Jim's preferred ending: The Scorpion King meets a giant desert hedgehog and is eaten! (a desert hedgehog, by the way, is immune to scorpion stings and noisily munches them as they sting their noses)
