Le Pacte des Loups (English title - Brotherhood Of The Wolf) is a French movie that combines adventure; period costume drama; horror; cheesy matrix-stylised marshal arts and action. Mixing genres can be fraught with the danger of cracking cranium on the hard floor between the comfy stools, but this movie manages to make a semi-comfortable bed by pushing the stools together in a row.

Le Pacte des Loups is about an odd couple - a naturalist and a Red Indian, as the rather more boringly named "Native American Indians" were known until recently. The Red Indian character was very well acted, but was a seen-it-all-before "taciturn nobal tribal warrior" cliche. The dynamic duo, who happen to be expert in marshal arts for some unclear reason, are sent by the King to investigate the horrible killings of women and sprogs for which the finger of suspicion is pointed at an enigmatic and fearsome lupine beastie.

There is a romantic subplot between our naturalist and an unfeasibly gorgeous aristocratic fille. But that doesn't get in the way of the fun too much. We have plenty of monsters, nudity, sex, fighting, wit, fine acting and style. Bravo!!!!! That's what we want! Talking of wit, I got the feeling some of the finer humour was lost due to the subtitles. But I actually like subtitles. With some modern movies I can't discern much of the mumbled dialog.

Le Pacte des Loups looks gorgeous, but it is a little too long for itself though (over 2 hours) and it never quite catches fire. I usually love French movies for their characters, but here I didn't get into the characters despite the fine cast; in particular, I remember the marvelous Vincent Cassel from Dobermann. (Dobermann is a grusomely violent - yet stormingly good - French crime movie.)

They poisoned the hero. They buried the hero and he lived? Hmmm. Still, it is fantasy I suppose. But even so...
