Rain? It poured!!!

The Perfect Storm kicks off with photogenic scenes of the harbour of the North Atlantic fishing port of Gloucester, Massachusetts. George Clooney, skipper of a Swordfish boat, is having a rough time of it, having caught sod all fish recently. Wishing to prove his skill as a fisherman, and earn some extra dosh, he convinces a crew of five to embark on an extra end-of-season fishing voyage.

Clooney doesn't cut it as a salty sea dog, beard or no beard. Whereas some celebs can transcend their fame and cause you believe in their characters, Clooney is not that type of talent. It difficult to suspend one's disbelief when Clooney is the "star". He renders an interesting, grunting performance, but other actors would have done better with this part. Marketing dictates a "star" is needed to sell the movie. This is perhaps Hollywood's greatest curse (other than cheesy dialogues and the corporate-driven policy of churning out rubbish films.)

Nevertheless The Perfect Storm was rather good despite the many tedious padding shots of gaggles of concerned women. Jaws didn't need them and nor did this movie. Just a token shot of a tearful wife would have sufficed. We get the idea. We don't care about the wives and girlfriends, bring on the action, hail the storm!

Better were the scenes that involved the hapless, bickering crew suffering in a sea of bad luck. Best of all was the storm itself: a thunderous leviathan. The hurricane-wrenched ocean with its colossal waves was computer generated. It is remarkable that the Special Effects crew were able to animate and paint an ocean as fantastic as this.

Final note: Clooney, according to the closing credits, had two assistants. No doubt one threw buckets of water over him during each shoot and the other handed him a towel afterwards.

Jim's preferred ending: A giant octopus attacks and wraps the ship in its writhing tentacles.
