Hannibal - by Shane

I've just checked your web site for a review of the film "Hannibal". We got it out last night. I wasn't very impressed at all. Jodie Foster did the right thing by not appearing in it. The girl who did was very wooden and one dimensional. The movie was not atmospheric or scary. Hopkins must need the money. It was so heavy handed that it laboured every point. They tried to giver Lecter a moral edge. He only kills corrupt or nasty people in the film.
It was the same mistake they made with the fairly recent "Dracula" with Gary Oldman. In the film he's portrayed as a good man, driven to evil by events. Rubbish! The whole point is both he (and Lecter) are monsters, and beyond morality. Seeing as I'm on a horror(ish) film rant, I'll carry on with Kenneth Branagh's "Frankenstein". The monster (Robert de Niro) couldn't carry it off. The whole point of this monster, is that you're meant to feel pity for it. Anyway, Lecter isn't really worth it.

Red Planet - by Shane

A word of warning. Don't watch "Red Planet". It's awful. Five guys (plus one female) off to Mars to save the world from ecological disaster. They have a robot on board, which will map the terrain for them. Just so you get the point, when looking at things from the robot's point of view, the words "Mapping Mode" appear on the top right of the screen. I said to my better half, "Don't tell me. I bet this thing has a military mode". Surprise surprise, it has. And when they crash land on Mars, guess what? Yes, it gets stuck in "military mode" and starts hunting them. One of them (the pilot, I think) pushes another off a cliff. I'm unsure why, as I was at the fridge on a beer run. Perhaps is was to save him further embarrassment at being in such a crappy film. The woman from the Matrix plays a heroic, angular faced commander. Terrance Stamp dies a serene death. Val Kilmer must be wishing he still got parts like "Heat". Lots of "running out of air but getting some just in time" stuff, and blasting off in convenient old abandoned Soviet hardware. Do yourself a favour and don't bother.

Magnolia - by Madpole

Not sequential

The film raises interesting question. DVD and "Home watching" vs Cinema. For I cannot imagine watching this film in cinema.. this is "private" film and I had to stop it every 10 minutes to have a good cry... I would hate this film if I watched it in cinema...I would have to walk out on it I feel.....

The film made me cry and laugh at the same time.. something I have NEVER experienced before....I kept my keyboard safely away... but I .. it was.. mind blowing experience... I never knew that one stupid disk can have such effect on me....

I do not want to say what film is about, particularly that I do not know... there is no sequence.. I do not understand half of the "plot" if there is plot there.... it is about HUMANITY and COINCIDENCES... that much I did understand... FORGIVNESS and ACCEPTANCE... and I have to shut up here ..
