The first film I saw in 2000 was an arthouse
flick called "Run Lola Run" and what a poetic,
surreal film!
"Run Lola Run" is German and I saw the subtitled
version. Hearing the dialog spoken in German
helped to add charm and ambiance to the experience.
A girl with dyed red hair gets a desperate gobsmacking
phonecall from her boyfriend requiring a nigh
on impossible favour or he is deeper in the
manure than unhatched alligator eggs. Then things
get really intangential.
We Brits like to laugh at the Germans for not
having a sense of humour, but they must have
one. This movie proves it. It's played straight,
it's not a comedy, but there are some moments
of such surreal humour that the I laughed out
loud at some points. And generally the film
was so clever that I found myself grinning at
it like an idiot.
If Lethal Weapon 19 is your bag then forget
this. But if you're in the mood for something
that will take your brain and spaghettify it
black-hole style then this is your baby. This
is a film that will stick with you. It's imaginative
and throws things at you that you've never seen
before. This is a film that gives you titbits
and leaves you wanting to know more about the
characters. If the film has a weakness it doesn't
give you enough about the relationships to fully
satisfy. Or maybe it says just enough.
For Arthouse films in general the main problem
is that we're addicted to films without art,
or a good story for that matter. Or is it that
we are being forced in that direction?
But that's besides the point. This film is twistier
than a nervous system and seizes you tighter
than a mosquito's jockstrap. Lola was wonderful.
Everyone was wonderful The direction is fantastic.
This is a beguiling, charming film.
Films
like this are promoted and not smothered by
the cash-driven, distribution-monopolising,
accursed Hollywood Studios.
