Simone is about a film maker (Al Pacino) with artistic integrity (not a Hollywood type obviously) who replaces a lousy pretty supermodel actress with a perfectly gifted gorgeous actress in his latest flick. But the gifted actress is computer generated: she - or it - " is Simulation One - or - Simone. His movie is a crowd pleaser. He inadvertently proves a point by showing that fake is more convincing than reality in our modern milieu of false, plastic, manufactured, crap “stars”, but he cannot bring himself to reveal his secret. The myth, religion-like burgeons into a monstrosity he is unable to control, despite the fact he controls every single one of her gorgeous pixels.

There are a million glaring plot holes in Simone, but that does not matter because this movie is a fairytale. Unlike Simone the actress or simulation or synthesbian, or “vactor” or whatever she is, it does not matter too much that Simone the movie is about as real as the idea that that creepy droid Michael Jackson and his ex-wife once “loved” each other.

There are points made that, even though they are sugar coated and simplistic, are interesting. The most underestimated merit a movie can have is not stars (on the contrary), funky direction, effects, sound, music or even dialogue. It is the idea. With such great potential it was a bloody shame Simone the movie is like Simone the CGI chick: confined in a two dimensional prison. And even with all the teasing about nudity and they never showed anything. Simone didn't have the balls to be great.

The thing that was really scary about this movie is that it *was* plausible was how easily Taranski’s life was dissected by the reptiles. His spending of money and other actions were documented: it was information that was bought by the media and demanded by the law. (The same is probably just as true of you and me). His private moves were monitored on surveillance cameras, as is insidiously happening to us now. I detest walking down streets or driving down roads with cameras pointing at me. Bastards!

Simone is great in that when Pacino tells the truth no one believes him, then when he lies, only then do they believe him! When he shows them an illusion they are convinced. When he gives them reality they denounce him as mad.

Even at the end, his daughter tells him some syrupy moral about it being ok to fake it as long as you don’t lie about it. Then, in a nice ending, his family wilfully join in the lie! Nice, except for one thing. The computer stuff was bullshit. Why would Hank give someone a portable hard drive that is likely to be compatible with 0.02% of computers and not a DVD disk? Artistic licence perhaps. But will some one explain to me why pacino infected his machine with a virus (on a disk called plague!) instead of simply deleting the files? He was obviously not a technophobe to pull off the stuff he did. Artistic licence again. But, and this really is unforgivable, why was a computer with graphics beyond even modern PC's kitted out with a drive to read the type of floppy disk that was obsolete ten years ago????? And since when did you have reversible action viruses???? And since he threw the hard drive with the simulation software on it into the sea, how did they generate Simone again????? Freaking idiots! Or was it a subtle reminder that nothing we see is real? If only we look and question then we can see the tears in reality. It's a nice thought, but my money is on the theory that stupidity is behind it, or someone is taking the piss. It is the best wager 90% the time.

Jim's preferred ending: Something that doesn't cause anybody who knows anything about computers to cringe.
