Comment:It's interesting that you bring up the race issue in the We Were Soldiers movie review. Hollywood has an incredible chip on it's shoulder with regard to racism. In both the first and Second World Wars the US consciously operated a policy of keeping Negroes away from other races of soldiers. The rationale being that Negroes were lazy, not as responsive to discipline and basically not as trustworthy or loyal as everyone else. In a war that was fought against a self confessed white supremisist it is ironic that 'the good ole US of A' held essentially the same beliefs about the human race being divided into superior humans and 'untermensch'. Black troops were fine for logistical and support roles, though in any kind of fighting role they would be supplemented by white Officers and SNCOs who would keep an eye on them and herd the 'dumb Negroes' toward the task in hand. With few exceptions, there is a film about a USAAF Mustang Squadron containing black pilots but I can't recall the film's name, the US film industry will usually ignore race in WW1 (1917- 1918 to the USA) and WW2 (Dec 1941 - Aug 1945 if you are a Yank) and concentrate on the action. There is a financial motive too, I can't help thinking that 'Saving Private Rastus' may not have been such a hit as the real movie. When it came to Vietnam, the US had finally allowed mixed race units and as usual the Americans can't wait to tell the world how bloody worthy and fairminded they are. Th eonly thing that amazes me is how long it took them to get around to using black troops for combat roles, because I'd have thought that they would have realised years before that bullets don't discriminate on racial grounds.

Comment:Jim, this is the first time that I have ever responded to any review. I was very surprised by your review of the movie 'We were soldiers.' If one was to measure it mechanically by traditional movie standards, it may be true that is may not measure up. However, in my mind there is more to a good movie than it's nuts and bolts. I am enrolled in the ROTC program at my college. I took a very personal view of this movie because with the war on terrorism, I may have the life's of soldiers in my hands. I believe that ever person has the right to their opinion, and I will fight and die to protect your right to make a review that may criticize me or my Army someday. History tells us that the Vietnam veterans who died, or worse, who lived through the war would face the political and social hell of rejection of our countries citizens. Your review appears to continue to carry the standard of rejection and pious misunderstanding of men who didn't want to fight, but who were simply doing their job. Sincerely, Aaron.

Comment:we where solders is a movie ,from a book, from an actual battle that really did happen.i know ,i supported that battle.we where solders was about indivisual courage, the will to live,a fight to the death!no movie ever made can depict the sounds of battle, your heart pounding so loud you think the enemy can hear it! i was never tested in vietnam as they were.man for man they stood there ground and fought for there lives and there buddies.they died protecting one another.time after time enlisted men and officers gave thir lives for each other.i suggest you read the book.then make a judgement.read about young boys who had lives to live, hopes and dreams, who sacrifice all.hand to hand combat is not about winning, loseing, your country, flag, its about survival, the will to live, protecting your buddy to your right and left.to not faulter, read the book.one last though, everyone i knewwent to veitnam, right or wrong we went.now i only know two people in the military.so serve your country

Comment:I read your review and was disappointed with your lack of understanding. This was a real battle for all that life holds. Doing the job great or poorly could not guaranty that you would live out the day, the hour, or the next minute. My best friend was in that battle, which lasted 2 months. He lived. His life was changed forever at 19 years old. The movie was accurate. Not writen by a Hollywood plot writer, not dressed to entertain your fantasies. It is true. Good, young, American men bled and died in a battle they weren't ready for. Just like in every war we have ever fought they were called and they went. The price of freedom is writen on The Wall.

Comment:I think that you are so full of shit it's unbelievable. I am in the military and just transferred from active to reserve. I have been over seas and seen combat, and seen people being killed and have shot other people. I have great remorse with what I have done, and every day I see the people whom I have shot, falling to the ground. You have no idea what war is like, except for what the media gives you. Maybe you should enlist, and experience what you critisize.

Comment:Hey dipshit have you ever even read the book? This is the true story asswipe and count your lucky stars that there are men like Hal Moore and his courageous troops to allow you to spew your vile hate mongering. Try reading and learning before you write a critic that is full of more bullshit than you claim is in this movie - which of course is not the case!
