I found this film a boring crap. However, I also found Crozza's analysis pretty accurate. “This is not a Hollywood gloss-over” is pretty much the only objective and consistent opinion I have about it and perhaps it is worth watching the damn thing just for that. The advice to read the book before watching the film seems to make perfect sense to me too: if You watch this film for the right reasons - You will be handsomely rewarded (according to the review above anyway hehehe). However, if You watch this film for “wrong” reasons – You will be severely punished (as I was hehehe) and totally confused in regards to what this film is trying to present or tell You.
You see...I watched this film at my friends, believing it was a bog standard American “War Action” movie. It ain’t.,,...
Knowing the real facts in advance helps. Knowing that it REALLY HAPPENED makes all the difference. Knowing WHY it all happened is where one sees the shining potential of this film: the film tries to allow us to put ourselves in the entirely ABSURD situation so we can experience how we feel about it. The film seems nonsensical, chaotic and stupid because the situation it describes was nonsensical, chaotic and stupid. It is ironic that the mastery and perfection in which the film managed to rely the events and associated feelings so accurately became a major obstacle on its road to success. This film is just too good for its own good and perhaps worth watching just for that. The story has deep philosophical overtones and works on many levels and the movie captured all that very well. It is also a splendid psychological trip: one starts with excitement which builds up at the beginning, then traces of boredom creep in but one keeps hopeful that one will be rewarded for one’s patience later, then the feeling of bemusement sets in: “no I can’t believe this is it, how stupid, what are they doing, this is crazy, it would never happen in real life” knowing that it DID happen in real life, then one gets a bit tired and bored, but one still can’t quite accept that this is really how the film will progress, and then one kindda resigns to it and the melancholic curiosity of how bad it is all going to end and then it ends and one is a bit ashamed that nearly 20 people lost their lives and one found it very boring and stupid and how such things can possibly happen, if at all..
