I would define Minority Report
as being a cross between Enemy of the State,
Time Cop and Demolition Man. The movie is set
fifty years in the future in an American city
where murder no longer exists. These almost-utopian
circumstances have come about through the future-seeing,
precognitive abilities of three genetically-modified
twins. Seen almost as gods by the people of
the city, the twins spend their existence in
a semi-dream state, laying in a pool of water
within the bowels of the pre-crime 'police'
headquarters. The twins are linked to a complex,
futuristic computer system that allows fuzzy
images of their foretelling dream to become
visible for the police to manipulate. When the
killer is identified, the pre-crime squad is
sent to stop the murder from taking place.
Tom Cruise plays one of the commanders of this
police division, who, haunted by the murder
of his only son, is on a crusade to maintain
the zero percent murder rate in the city. However,
Cruise uncovers the beginnings of a conspiracy
within the pre-crime organisation and is obviously
shocked when he receives a foretelling by the
twins of himself committing a murder. Using
resources obtained during his career, he manages
to evade capture and proceeds to try to uncover
the complex interlocking conspiracies that are
taking place around him.
I really enjoyed this film, although there were
some dodgy plot holes. The action was pretty
fast paced throughout the film. The acting was
good - mainly due to the female pre-cog twins
'just out of the womb' style nervousness. The
science fiction ideas of the future were both
plausible and interesting. Possibly my favourite
part involved Tom Cruise's surgical method of
changing his identity. I thought this scene
was brilliant and it had me cringing in my seat.
Overall, I'd give this film 4/5. The four because
the film had its great moments and kept me interested
even though it was quite lengthy. Also, there
were one or two plot twists that I didn't foresee,
that were very entertaining. It doesn't get
full marks, however, due to a few major plot
holes and for being pretty simple to predict.
