I typed here... the difference is that probaly 3 people will see and talk about my '!'... but the whole world knows about the cow now....or sheep... Art of Cooking, Art of making bed.. Art of tying one's shoe laces.. You name it .. everything we do is Art.. we are pure Artists... for we don't seek recognition for it.. my shoes are not on a display.. they are .. err.. on my feet... | | | | | From: |
Matt | 2007-03-23 19:56:38 | | Subject: | Causation, culture and change | | Comment: | I'm not entirely convinced that all art and culture changes are due to technological change. Of course technological changes can cause great changes in social, economic and environmental changes leading to changes in the society and culture. The use of steam power to turn spin cotton and wool caused massive change, as did the discovery of bronze, and iron and how to extract, melt and use it.
But many changes in art have come from knowledge, of not a technical but abstract nature; finding a model for the movement of the planets around the sun is not a technical but an abstract change; representing three dimensions on two, using vanishing points is a change of abstraction.
Perhaps as a philosopher you should portray the nature and power of mind as well!
