If the mind is damaged and altered by brain damage, then it follows that the mind cannot survive the annihilation of the brain when death-time finally arrives. Consciousness is a symptom of the firing of neurones in certain, well-identified parts of the brain. Wreck those neurones and you will forever forfeit your consciousness - as surely as blindness follows the malfunction of the eyes. The biologic brain, not the "soul", is the source and engine of the mind.

The "soul" is a physically and mentally superfluous construct. The ancient Christians believed that angels pushed the planets around the sun. Today, we know that gravity, not angels, is the mechanism behind the planetary orbits. The soul is about as useful in explaining our personalities and minds as angels are in explaining how the planets circle the sun.

Religious people are loath to let uncomfortable facts interfere with their snug belief in the existence of the human soul - the immortal soul. The cosy idea of a celestial Father watching over them, loving them tirelessly, shields these faithful from the finality of the grave (or the notion that life is transitory and fleeting.) This reminds me of a child finding solace in a toy. The toy is bestowed with an imaginary life by the child, and this is normal and wonderful - for children. Nature, likewise, is given an imaginary life - God - by those with religion, even adults, who should know better in this day and age.

Evangelists are so insecure about their religion that they demand that people believe their dogma without even questioning it. This unreasonable acceptance of myth is called faith.

The myriad living (and thousands more extinct) religions and cults tend to contradict one another in every detail - from minutiae all the way up to the tenets. This inspires scant confidence in the ability of religion to get it right. No wonder most religions decree that the faithful must subscribe strictly, and unquestioningly, to their own particular belief set. To insist that one's own religion is correct - and that the thousands of others are therefore wrong - is self-delusion gone berserk. You're special and the rest of the world are wrong? yeah right. Everybody thinks that.

The only "evidence" for the soul is the say-so of a subset of these religious "believers", this is hardly bullet-proof evidence! If you believe what such people say, you may as well believe everything anybody says. Including people who have a different religion to you.

So taking everything together, it is safe to say that the soul exists only in the wishful imaginations of the compulsively self-delusional.

People often picture their Deity as resembling themselves. This point illustrates that people's religious beliefs are based entirely on ego and their environment, and not on objectivity. It is well known that if there is a god then He is an Englishman. Sounds absurd? Yes? Exactly! This illustrates my point!

The soul is dead, now it is time for a dash of evil.

Do you believe in the existence of the soul?
