Themobius strip is a fascinating
object. To make one, take a strip of paper,
twist one end by 180 degrees, and glue the ends
together, forming a loop. You now have a mobius
strip. Mark one side with a dot. Slide the strip
through finger and thumb and notice that you
have to rotate the strip twice for the dot to
reappear. The mobius strip only has one surface.
Electrons and quarks are behave like mobius
strips: Loosely speaking, they "spin"
twice before the same "face" is back
where it began. You are made of weird little
spinning mobius strips!
A more pragmatic use for mobius strips: boxer
shorts, Y-fronts and knickers. A pair of undies
fashioned into the form of a mobius strip will
last twice as long before they
need washing. This is because they will have
twice as much surface to get soiled before they
need be consigned to the laundry bin. This makes
them environmentally friendly.
