Cats don't always have such a lovely lot in life. Visit an animal shelter anywhere in the U.S. (don't know if the parallel exists in England). Cats are gassed and disposed of by the thousands in the U.S. due to irresponsible (yes, responsiblity ignored by 'free-willed' humans) owners who fail to spay and neuter their pets. In other countries and cultures a common house-cat might find itself on the plate of a happy diner, garnished with noodles and watercress. So the joyful lethargy MadPole admires about cats may not be the average fate of the domestic feline. Perhaps he should enjoy his drudgery and count his blessings :)
I start to realize lately that Responsiblity gives freedom - not other way around. Orwell and 'Singles' computer game changed my mind just like that. Responsibility gives us freedom to be who we really want to be.
Firstly i have always wondered if cats can actually think? When humans think we think in a language which sounds like our own voice. In a sense we all hear voices. However, cats do not have a language to think in.They cannot create or speak a language due to them not being able to make the required number of different sounds and the issue of intellignce. So,doesn't this suggest they don't think, after all how is it possible without this voice or language? This then leads to the conclusion thats cats cannot have freewill because even if it is a theoretical possibility, it would still require thought to make a choice.
I would also suggest that you must have freedom before responsibility because if you become responsible e.g. you have children then this limits your freedom, but how can it limit it unless you had it to begin with. I will come back to better explain what i mean at a later date.
All I can say about all this FREEWILL stuff, is that everyone is getting their ideas and answers from Philosopher's, so of course none of you have freewill because you are taking the opinion's or ideas from someone else. I guess my question would be, do you think that this question would even come up if you did believe in the Creator? A one true being who Created the Heavens and the Earth? Try the answer from the other side of the table before you jump to conclusions!
