Comment:'Western culture has indoctrinated me to desire what I lack, rather than luxuriate in what I have.' I like this. This is dead-on. But perhaps missing one point. Not only are we to desire what we lack, but we are to desire what everybody else desires. We are taught to conform. We are told that we should be lawyers, doctors, accountants, stock brokers, managers, money-changers, salesmen, CEO's and Cops. If you don't conform, if you don't join the scurrying mob, then you are looked down upon, spat upon and denigrated. They never instill hope in the young. They never let the young properly mature. They are rushed from the warmth of the womb straight into a system of competition and warfare with their peers. The biggest dog wins. The smartest boy gets the bank. They never teach a young man to follow his bliss. We are told just to follow. Seek power. Seek security. Seek position ambitiously. Don't be a writer or a painter or a sculptist or a Broadway actor or anything else that might bring you real joy if you possess a passion for it. Don't do that. Seek to live the good life, they say. A house, a car, a pension, a checking account, one vacation a year and an asshole boss. Good stuff. Add acid reflex disease, hypertension, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cataracts to the mix and you've got yourself a sweet life. There's another way, of course: Follow your bliss. Through hell, high water, an angry mob and to the gallows. But, seriosly, don't do that. Nobody ever really makes it, do they? Well, you just might make the gallows, but I gaurantee you a belly laugh on the plank.

Comment:Yes, I agree, philosophy is fun. It is simply mind bending exercise, stretching one's brain on the same principle as one stretches one's aching bones in the morning. Therefore philosophy does produce very practical outcome - thanks to philosophy we discover new things about ourselves, philosophy makes us more 'whole', prepares us for acceptance of concepts and situations in our real life which we could not accept before. Therefore philosophy does make our lives happier, does make us happier. Therefore I disagree with my previous agreement.
