Whilst
stomping on some ants in the garden I was struck
by an unpleasant thought. We are evolving into
a society with much in common with that of the
social insects: ants, termites, hornets etc.
Social insects are social because they are genetically
compelled to be so. Social behaviour works for
them and so the genes encoding that behaviour
are passed down from generation to generation.
Something analogous to social insect behaviour
makes us swarm in towns and cities like ants
in their dark colonies. What is this incentive
which compels us to behave so?
The answer is money. Money is to us what genes
are to ants. Money will govern the evolution
of humans in the future more than DNA! In the
richer nations we are no longer evolving according
to the principles of natural selection. In the
rich nations sick babies survive, exchanging
the grave in the cold earth for the incubator
in the cosy hospital.
People with defective genes that make them stupid
would, in the caveman era, have starved to death
because they were too clueless to hunt for food,
or otherwise obtain enough food to survive.
Not anymore. They breed as prolifically as rabbits:
but, unlike rabbits, there are no predators
to keep their spiralling numbers in check.
I call this theory of money-driven evolution,
"Economically Ventured Evolution" (EVE). EVE
is the theory concerned with human evolution
governed by
selfish economics rather
than selfish genes.
In the future economists will be predicting
the evolution of humans through an EVE type
theory. Meanwhile naturalists will be modelling
the economy, which behaves like an ecosystem.
For the first time in the history of life, life
(humans that is) has found a way to evolve which
is almost independent of what defines life itself:
DNA. We ants have swapped our life-giving queen
for cash, the root of all evil. The human race
has greedily sold its soul to the Devil.
Money
is red in tooth and claw. For us, unlike
ants, extinction beckons. Anyone out there wish
to buy a nuclear warhead?
EVE will doom Mankind just as the biblical
Eve is mythically accredited for giving birth
to it.
