| Comment: | I'm afraid I have to disagree with the women make love/men shag thing. I think it's an illusion that a lot of men retain in order to protect themselves from the uncomfortable idea that their wives/girlfriends/partners can be just as mercenary. When the social divide between men and women was much greater than it is today, female sexuality was more actively repressed, and more successfully so, than male sexuality. Gay men were outlawed in Victorian times, but there have never been any laws regarding lesbians, because people just didn't believe it would happen. Women were just too pure, too unsexual. Women didn't shag, they made love. After all, if you are able to sleep with whoever you want for pleasure, without forming strong attatchments which would lead to emotional dependance, this gives you power and independance, something which women, say, 150 years ago, were actively prevented from having. I think the men shag/women make love misconception is a social hangover from those days. |
